Note: In order to obtain an apostille on your car’s title, it must be signed and notarized. Below, we have provided step-by-step instructions on how to notarize your vehicle’s title depending on the situation.
Selling Your Car: If you are selling your vehicle to an international buyer, all you need to do is meet with a local notary public and have your vehicles original title signed and notarized. Please be sure to complete the transfer of title form completely to avoid any delays or additional costs.
Vehicle Stolen & Recovered: If your vehicle has been stolen and recovered in a foreign country, go ahead and make a color copy of your title and meet with a local notary public. You will need to attest that you are the owner of the recovered vehicle and that the color copy is a true copy of the original document in your possession. This is basically a sworn affidavit. Some states may call this document “Copy Certification by Document Custodian.”
You can use the following example wording:
“I certify that I am the owner of the vehicle recovered in Mexico and that this is a true color copy of the original title in my possession.”
Exporting Your Car: Are you relocating to another country? Go ahead and make a color copy of your title and meet with a local notary public. You will need to attest that the color copy is a true copy of the original. This is basically a sworn affidavit.
You can use the following example wording:
“I certify that I am the owner of this vehicle and that this is a true color copy of the original title in my possession. My intention is to export my vehicle to Italy because I will be moving there.”
Are you currently outside of the U.S. and you are a U.S. Citizen? Please visit the closest U.S. Embassy to meet with a notary there. Please contact the Embassy before as most notarization are by appointment only.
